How to Create the Perfect Fall Look

< Back to the article list

Are you ready to transition out of shorts, tank tops, and sandals and put together a more sophisticated look for the chillier days ahead? If so, you’re in luck, because we recently sat down with Danielle Gilbert, a personal stylist based in San Diego, to get her top tips for creating some fierce Fall looks that won’t break the bank.

“Fall is by far my favorite season,” said Gilbert. “Spring and Summer are all about ‘less is more’ lightweight fabrics and staying cool, but Fall is all about layering, accessories, and of course, we can’t forget the boots!”

Read on for a few easy ways to make this Fall season your most fashionable yet.

How to Create Fall Looks

Accessorizing Your Fall Look is KEY

You can easily transform an everyday outfit into a wow-worthy look with the right extra pieces. “You don’t have to buy designer to get the same look,” said Gilbert.

“Find inspiration through magazines, style blogs, and social media,” she suggested. “Take pictures of key accessories like sunglasses, scarves, and handbags, and keep your eyes out for dupes [duplicates, or ‘knock-offs’] that have the same shape, color, and style.”

A few more pro accessorizing tips? Gilbert explained that cat-eye and oval sunglasses are huge this season, and to look into bold color scarves to add that instant pop. For the pièce de résistance? “A structured handbag is a must,” said Gilbert.

Find That Statement Coat

“Coats are such an investment,” said Gilbert. And that doesn’t change from season to season. “Picking up a basic black cashmere piece that will stay in your wardrobe for years is important, but when it comes to trend and fashion, you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg for a fun Fall coat,” she said.

Trendy coats are all about having fun, but since you might not wear them after a season or two, try to spend less money on these items. “Look for key trends this Fall season in an array of plaids,” Gilbert suggested. If plaid isn’t your thing, Gilbert said, “Don’t forget leopard or snake prints! Treat them like a neutral and wear them as a statement.”

More into solid colors? “Add a pop of color in either red, burnt orange, or the It color, yellow!” suggested Gilbert. “Believe me, you will get noticed.”

It’s All About the Boot

Is it even Fall if you don’t have great boots to wear? Here’s Gilbert’s take on this season’s “in” footwear: Low profile ankle booties. “Every season has an ‘it’ boot, and this season we’re seeing the true bootie coming back,” said Gilbert.

Need some pointers? “Look for buckles and a chunky heel,” suggested Gilbert for starters, and when it comes to color? All things animal! Snakeskin and leopard are back again in footwear. (Are you sensing a theme here?) As for the solids, it’s all about wine. Bordeaux and cognac are Gilbert’s top colors, in addition to a “strong” gray.

Embrace Bold Colors

Great news: color is in. “Fall can tend to be drab, dark, and intimidating, but this current season is far from that!” said Gilbert.

“This Fall color is so important,” Gilbert continued. “I’m seeing lots of burnt orange, yellow and mustard, and hunter green paired with bright navy. Black is always key, but this year substitute it with camel or a rich gray.”

No matter what wardrobe choices you make this season, investing in yourself, from the inside out, is always a great idea!
